Special Session Anticipated for Monday

Last night, House Speaker Melissa Hortman (DFL-Brooklyn Park) sent an email to House members and staff saying, “We anticipate the Governor will issue a proclamation on Friday, July 10^th, calling the Legislature into special session on Monday, July 13^th.”

Walz Requests Federal Support to Help Rebuild After Civil Unrest

Last week, Governor Tim Walz requested financial support from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to help Minnesota rebuild after civil unrest damaged public infrastructure and caused extensive fire damage in the wake of George Floyd’s death.

Walz and Advocates Celebrate Launch of Minnesota Insulin Safety Net Program

Today, Governor Walz, Lieutenant Governor Flanagan, and insulin affordability advocates celebrated the launch of the Minnesota Insulin Safety Net Program. The program, created by the Alec Smith Insulin Affordability Act, allows Minnesotans in urgent need of insulin to access the life-saving drug through their pharmacy.

“Every Minnesotan deserves access to the medicine they need at a price they can afford,” Governor Walz said. “But the skyrocketing cost of insulin has priced too many Minnesotans out of the drug they need to live. Thanks to the fighting spirit of Minnesotans with diabetes and the families who have lost loved ones to this crisis, this program will now provide much-needed relief to Minnesotans struggling to afford their insulin.”

Walz Announces More Than Half a Million COVID-19 Tests in Minnesota

Governor Tim Walz today announced the state has completed more than half a million COVID-19 tests and has reached the milestone of developing a daily capacity of 20,000 COVID-19 molecular tests. Governor Walz says the milestone is thanks to Minnesota’s advanced COVID-19 testing program, first announced two months ago.

Walz Announces Coronavirus Relief Funding for Communities Across the State

Governor Tim Walz and Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan today announced a plan to distribute $853 million in relief to communities across the state impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. $841 million will be distributed to Minnesota counties, cities, and towns to support local government coronavirus relief efforts. $12 million will be allocated toward food shelves and food banks to help combat hunger across Minnesota. The funding was authorized under the federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act.

Walz Signs Six Bills

Last night, Governor Tim Walz signed six bills into law, including measures to increase reimbursement rates for child care providers, prohibit schools from suspending prekindergarten students, increase vaping prevention instruction, and require all teachers to have annual mental health training.

Walz Announces Businesses Can Now Apply for $62 Million in COVID-19 Relief Funding

Governor Tim Walz today announced the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development (DEED) is now accepting applications for the $62.5 million Small Business Relief Grants Program for businesses impacted by COVID-19, which he signed into law last week.
